Extracts from Study Travel Magazine: Northern Irish Gem

NORTHERN IRISH GEM

Karen Russell, Business Development Manager at International House (IH) Belfast and Principal Paul McMullen were both interviewed for an artricle ”Northern irish Gem” published in Study Travel Magazine (August 2013).

Karen Russell highlights the fact that Northern Ireland is a ”brand new” destination: ”Northern Ireland is one of the few places left in the UK which can give students a truly unique authentic experience: is unique in that it is an English-speaking country which has not yet been saturated with international students. That means there is less likelihood of our students spending all their time socialising with people in their own language, it is very easy for students to connect with our local culture, meet local people and enjoy famous craic!*”

”Many of our students come through word-of-mouth and students telling their friends and family about the fantastic experience they have had here. Many of our students love it so much that they extend their stay or return again and again.”

”Year-round you can find live music every night of the week and on a Wednesday night, our students enjoy experiencing a traditional Irish session in Maddens pub where they can learn Irish dancing and listen to traditional music. Throughout the year there are festivals each month in the city so there are always fun and interesting things to do. In fact there are more festivals in Belfast than in any other city in Europe.”

IH Belfast is a founder member of ENGLISH UK NI where NI stands for ”Northern Ireland”. English UK NI organises intercity events with other members. Russell explains, ”Belfast students can go to Derry and students from Derry can come to Belfast and be welcomed and shown around by the students currently studying in that city.”

Last year, at the time of the launch of regional sub-group, Paul McMullan, Principal of IH Belfast, said,”it made sense to form English UK NI as it gives us much more power as an active body in approaching and working with our tourist board and other organisations.”

McMullan adds, ”What we're trying to do is pull together not only the English UK NI members but the many other bodies, government and otherwise, involved with tourism and inward investment. We want to be working together to put Northern ireland on the map.”

”There is an expression in Belfast, 'The people make the place',” relates [Karen] Russel. ”The people of Belfast are famous for being open, warm and friendly and visitors from other countries are welcome wherever they go.”

Cutting remarks

Went for a haircut this morning. But, not only having a few words of Turkish made the experience an interesting one. First I was invited to a cup of sweet Turkish tea. Then, having cut my hair and trimmed my beard, the barber proceeded to daub a face mask on foreheadand cheeks. In broken English the hairdresser told me to wait 5 minutes before he'd wash it off.

Got washed. After drying face and hair the next step was to oil my face with two kinds of fragrant oils followed by a head and face massage. Then the hair master told me to cross my arms and lean forward on a towel which he'd placed in front of me. This felt rather like being back in class in infant school. But when the man next to you has an old - fashioned razor blade at his disposal it feels safer to do as you're told.

Somewhat to my surprise he massaged my neck, shoulders and back. At that time the barber decided he'd done a good job. And, I must say, I agree with him. My skin feels better and the haircut was as I had hoped, my beard somewhat shorter! Needless to say the the price for the total makeover was more than I'd expected to pay, but only a little more than what I usually pay for a haircut in Stockholm.

Sometimes it pays not to be able to communicate in a common language.
